All Inclusive Weekend / Mini-Break

Staying at The Artisan Bakery School in Sparkwell, South Devon

Visitors-Book-IICome to the glorious South Hams countryside, to our cottage on the edge of Dartmoor and just twenty minutes from the stunning South Devon Coast. Learn to bake a whole variety of organic artisan breads and pizzas, from simple yeasted to overnight sourdoughs, and discover how to fit baking real bread into even the busiest lifestyle.

House front gardenThis is a really exceptional opportunity to cover all the artisan baking or pizza making tuition  you need, or perhaps focus on developing your Viennoiserie skills.   There will be a maximum of four guests plus two day students in these classes to ensure we have time to focus on your individual ideas, and can tailor the baking practice to suit you.  Plus, there plenty of lovely local sights and activities for non-bakers to enjoy! It’s like a casual country cottage weekend with a serious baking theme, and suitable even for those who’ve never baked before.

Weekend Programme:

(Please note, we are also happy to run this residential course as a mid-week mini-break.)

KitchenFriday : Arrival at Old Home Cottage 6pm-7pm for welcome drinks, when you will meet your host-tutors Penny and Dragan and your fellow guests. Over a delicious supper with wine, using fresh local produce, we’ll discuss the weekend’s plans.

Saturday :  We start baking your first artisan creations, exploring the difference between breads made using baker’s yeast and those made using natural, wild yeast leaven.  We finish around 3pm, to give you time to go for a walk on the moors or drive to the coast.  Over a three-course dinner, we’ll drink to your successes and finish the evening swapping stories by the fire…

Sunday: Up early (-ish) to bake your overnight sourdough with Dragan, some ryes and/or gluten free loaves with Penny.

house-Sitting-RoomThe weekend can be a busy one, but if you wish we can of course make you some  free time on  one of the days to stretch your legs, check out the beach, or chill out with a book.

Departure: With your arms full of beautiful breads, and your head buzzing with ideas, you’ll be on the road by 4pm and hopefully miss the traffic on the way home.

The living room is the perfect spot for cosy evenings round the fire. Following years of neglect, the rambling garden is still a work in progress, but offers plenty of privacy and space for relaxing outdoors.

Local information:

BedroomThe little village of Sparkwell is only eight miles from Plymouth city centre, but feels remarkably rural. It has one church, one school, one public golf course and one pub, the Michelin-starred Treby Arms.  Sparkwell is also the home of Dartmoor Zoological Park, subject of the movie, “We Bought a Zoo”.

The South Hams is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  Long, sandy beaches, towering cliffs, the famous Burgh Island, wildlife reserves and the awe-inspiring moors offer more than anyone could hope to fit into a single weekend. Historic gardens, abbeys and castles, Dartmouth, Totnes and Salcombe all invite you to explore, on foot or by boat. For maps and information, please ask us.
